Descrizione Opera / Biografia

Velvet Rain
Canvas, oil, wire, sand, relief paste
28 × 45 x 15 cm
Year of creation: 2022–2025
The artwork consists of two parts. In the main part, we see a sleeping figure emerging from the canvas, awakening from dreams through the rain. The figure protrudes forward from the surface like a sculptural painting or relief, extending 15 cm outward. About 10 cm away from the figure, a large green bud is displayed as a separate but conceptually connected element. One may sense that the figure awakens due to the bud’s attempt to blossom. The bud is created from canvas, wire, and oil paint.

Creative Style:
In 2008, a significant shift occurred in Aistė Gabrielė Černiūtė’s artistic practice—she began to systematically explore relief and sculptural painting, expanding the boundaries of traditional painting. Her work places strong emphasis on color and the character of textures. While oil paint and canvas remain her primary media, she also incorporates unconventional materials such as wire, sand, and relief pastes, which give the surface a tangible structure and plastic tension, creating an alternative reality.
While experimenting, the artist remains committed to the discipline of professional painting, adhering as much as possible to technological principles and subtly balancing between classical painting and mixed media. Her work is narrative in nature—her canvases develop everyday stories into which dream states or a sense of otherworldliness seem to intrude. The artist’s works function like painterly poems. They recite lyrically and declaim visually. A. G. Černiūtė’s canvases are high reliefs that evolve into three-dimensional objects, where each brushstroke exists and acts as a poetic figure.
The artist lives and works in Vilnius, Lithuania.
