Watching the sea
(I and AI watch at the sea together)
video - duration 3:22 - year 2019
The work deals with the relationship between human and artificial vision in an age in which we are starting to confront Artificial Intelligence.
Our eye and that of the machine look for different things, and here they confront each other in front of the same scene.
The vision of the machine is made evident by the ”interest points” that follow the ripples on the water, by the red lines that trace the horizon, by the vectors that detect the movement of the waves. They are basic functions of a computer vision system that extracts the data that will be used for more complex subsequent processing.
We look at the sea, together, and each with their own eyes, with their own thoughts.
The video is made with the camera of a smart phone, experimenting the new visions directly in everyday life, in an intimate experience outside the research laboratories. The sound is based on an algorithmically generated music.
Marco Cadioli has focused his research on images that materialize on computer screens, blurring the boundaries between real and virtual. The Net is the territory of Marco Cadioli’s explorations, with the analytical eye of the photographic medium since the early 2000s.
Cadioli was a net reporter, entering war simulation video games as an embedded photographer, and worked as a reporter from virtual worlds for the international press. He then focused on the representation of the world in Google Earth, with a series of works that explore the new perspective offered by the satellite view.
His current works deal with how and what Artificial Intelligence is learning, once again introducing a new form of vision.
In many works by Marco Cadioli there is a subversion of the use of systems and software, misused or used to do more than their main purpose to go beyond the surface of the algorithms.
He has exhibited in solo and group show, at national and international level, including: Interfacce del presente, BASE, Milano 2019; #LAYERS Contemporary Art in the Digital Era, iMAL, Brussels 2018; Necessary Lines, LinkArt Center (solo show), Brescia 2014; Googleheim, Electronic Media Arts Centre, Toronto 2013; Abstract Journeys, Gloria Maria Gallery (solo show) Milano 2012; BYOB, Museo Pecci Milano 2012; Neoludica, Biennale di Venezia 2011; AFK, Casino Luxembourg 2011; FotoGrafia, Macro Testaccio, Roma 2010; Atopic Festival, Paris 2009; Netspace, MAXXI, Roma 2007.
He is a lecturer at the Accademia Belle Arti di Brera, Milano and Accademia SantaGiulia di Brescia.
