Descrizione Opera / Biografia
I take a cross-disciplinary approach combining street culture, graffiti, and poster design on traditional canvases. I explore such subjects as sense of otherness and not belonging, overspreading anxiety, communication failure, addictions, dysfunctional families, and claustrophobic open spaces. However I don’t believe my works explain anything, my artistic statement is emptiness and nothingness. I percept the reality as a questionable, untrustworthy, and unstable concept. I had been studying linguistics and literature at university in Moscow and worked as an editor in several publishing houses and since then I am in love with letters and texts, and thus typography plays a huge role in my works. Having grown up in the 1990s when the digital had been taking over the analogue I use the both techniques to create my works. I draw the first sketches with ink, then I re-do them in vector, then I print vector drawings to make hand-cut stencils which are later being spray painted on a canvas. I finish a work with hand drawings using graffiti markers. So it’s always a journey from analogue to analogue via vector.
