About the piece
—
Abstract collage made from various pieces of packaging paperboard. I used existing materials (basically trash) because I don’t see the point in coloring surfaces, when ink on paper abounds everywhere you look. Plus paperboard is very malleable and I like the way the packaging’s folds create subtle, dimensional lines in the artwork. The composition is heavily influenced by Mondrian’s work and Constructivism in general, with a hint of post-modern/deconstructivist graphic design.
About me
—
Born in Brazil in 1980, I graduated as a visual designer, after interrupting my Architecture & Urban Planning studies. My design career brought me to Amsterdam in 2011. In 2018 I decided to shift my focus exclusively to the visual arts, an idea that had been on my mind for a while. I have since moved to Brussels, where I’m currently based.
About the production
—
Much like someone making sense of their life by piecing together parts of events happening to and around them, in my work I rearrange elements that surround me into compositions that reflect the way I relate to the world.
These elements are usually captured or found: why paint a surface, when there are copious amounts of ink on paper everywhere you look? Or they were created by me for a different purpose and given up on, to later be repurposed as part of a new piece, along with fragments of other similarly abandoned attempts. Once again, not so different from life: of the countless things left behind, by choice or force, it’s the way we handle them that make up who we are.
Balance is the goal, inspired by and hopefully representative of the complexities of our world, always in flux, embracing its complications to derive meaning and beauty from it.
