TOMÁŠ VAVŘÍČEK – INSTALACE PLICE (INSTALLATION LUNGS)
In this spacious videoart installation the video is generated by breath of a spectator. Video is surrounding the spectator and it changes depending on how the spectator is breathing. The installation shows the image of your own breath. This videoart installation is similar to speciousl videoart installations created by Pippilotti Rist or Nuria Ruit de Viñaspre.
Breathing is ever since considered as a basic biologic process but it is also activity that connects our surrounding (air) with human body and its spirit. We can spot a reminiscence of this relation even in ancient languages. Indian literature has the word PRANA that doesn’t only mean breath and air but also a sacred essence of life. We can observe similar meanings in ancient Greek (PNEUMA), Hebraic (RAUCH) or Japanese (KI). Old ancient civilizations have known that different breathing techniques could provoke deep change of consciousness. Whole spectrum of those procedures can be found in aborigine cultures all over the world that used these techniques for religious or medical purposes. In recent decades even the western world puts once lost emphasis on human breath.
Interactive audiovisual installation PLICE (LUNGS) was created as a cooperation between artists Tomáš Vavříček and Pavel Karafiát. The aim was to create a unique biofeedback device with the use of a programmable microchip arduino, sensitive thermometers and wireless data transmission. Video and audio output were created in vvvv and Pure Data environment. The output of a breathing process is transferred into activity of light in your surrounding. Installation PLICE (LUNGS) is always unique with respect to the space where it is placed. It is a site-specific spacious videoart installation.
