Ben Hur è un epico film del 1959. Ben Hur è il titolo dell’installazione presentata al Combat 2020 da g. olmo stuppia. L’opera si compone in varie forme in base agli spazi espositivi ed è frutto di un ritrovamento di una copia della Statua della Libertà in Sicilia. L’originale è un mito per le generazioni del dopoguerra e simbolo degli Stati Uniti. In pochi invece ricordano che è stata realizzata dallo scultore Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi e Gustave Eiffel come dono della Francia agli USA. E’ stato un cambio di passo degli ”imperi”: dalla vecchia Europa alla rampante America.
La statua è stata rinvenuta dall’artista in un ex drive in sulla strada provinciale SS192 che collega Enna a Catania, in Sicilia (che è anche il più grande Hub europeo per le forze militari USA e Nato).
La testa è stata lentamente segata dal tronco alto due metri. Siamo saliti sul tetto del drive in abbandonato per poterla prendere.
Alle spalle della Statua della Libertà, che adornava come una polena un vecchio drive in anni ’70, decollavano e decollano ogni notte droni armati verso la Libia (ex colonia italiana oggi contesa tra le potenze europee e regionali).
Ben Hur, è un’installazione che ragiona sull’epicità e sull’uso improprio del termine libertà. E’ un’archeologia del futuro e assurge così a icona del nostro tempo, ponendo ancora una volta domande insondabili sullo stato di fatto delle nostre libertà. Sulla necessità di guardarne i simboli decrepiti ed eroici. Per trovarne una nuova grammatica sull’orlo della sesta estinzione di massa.

The head was slowly sawn from the two-meter-high trunk. We climbed onto the roof of the abandoned drive to catch it.
