ARTIST’s NOTELEE, DONG YEONNature has been the important motif for so many artists to date. However in many cases, they only end up imitating the nature. Of course, an imitative art is also one of fields in art I reckon. However if you look into it a little deeper and peel away a layer, you will find the nature itself is a metaphor of our lives. Nobody can boast that they know everything about it. Yet I think it is a joyful thing to take a small piece out of its corner and make efforts to learn and talk about it; a smallest piece that enables us to have knowledge about nature, to be aware of life and to discuss about our own lives, rather than speaking of high-flown philosophical concepts. Thus my work began from this small piece. I try to reinterpret the earth that we step on - the Mother Earth, the movement of the air and the lives living within through the process of combining lines and planes. My works portray the changes and deepness of the invisible space formed inside nature and furthermore depict of a simple logic that everything in the universe is alive, existent, and also momentous. It is to realize that life is ephemeral, though we live as if we will exist forever. It is the voice of the Mother Nature; in the larger extent, the voice of the universe. Through its own languages, the nature talks about its existence; only because it is not visible to human eyes, it does not mean that it does not exist. Moreover we must realize that what we see is not the whole truth. This voice creates numerous forms and imbues the vital force into the space. It also makes and diffuses invisible energies all around us. It is an extremely personal experience to realize and create images of instant moments that vanish at a flash; that are instantaneous but which certainly exist in this world. Finally, I believe the story that nature bears within itself is something that we all can sympathize and communicate with.
