The painterly quality stems from the particular selection of colors for the composition:Landscapes, still lifes and figurative scenes primarily use restrained color tones. Often they contrast with a single (or a few) strong colors, a line (to be understood as a hint), a pithy abbreviation, or a captured moment of motion.On the other hand, some brush strokes are self referential and highlight the quality of a marking.I often consciously leave the background as an empty surface and leave the environment only partially formulated.In this way, the figures in their relationship to space remain rudimentarily defined, or completely open.By leaving the surface of the painting in its natural empty state, the materiality and texture steps into the foreground and gains special importance.I react to what is already in existence, I interact with the material.
