Descrizione Opera / Biografia

LACUNA. Land of hidden spaces is part of a bigger project, called Reflecting Venice; this intends to investigate the possibility of responding to last year’s increase of environmental issues affecting Venice, in Italy. Through the application of an interdisciplinary methodology, Reflecting Venice explores technological innovation and its implications. Considering local context in conjunction with new environmental goals is beneficial in redefining their broader effectiveness and functionality. The video has the will to combine and intertwine the different ’actors’ of the project: a prototype of solar wall made with mirrors, referring to Archimedes’ inventions, the ancient tradition of engraved glass in Murano (Venice), and the fragile environment of the Lagoon, now in peril.Elena Mazzi was born in 1984 in Reggio Emilia (Italy). She received her BFA in 2007 in History of Art from Siena University, and her MFA in 2011 in Visual Art from IUAV, Venice University. She spent a semester as guest student at Royal Academy of Art (Konsthögskolan) of Stockholm. Elena Mazzi has been included in various exhibitions including the solo exhibitions Posso essere racchiuso in uno spazio di noce e considerarmi un re dello spazio infinito at La Fenice Gallery in Venice and Collective memory and social space at Botkyrka Konsthall in Stockholm, after a three months residency and collective exhibitions as Letters from the sky video art festival at COP17 in Durban, IUAV Pavillion at XIV BBCC Expo in Venice, COMMON GROUND, projects for the Lagoon in Venice, TRA/ARADA/INBETWEEN in Istanbul, Volumi contrastanti/ Kontrasterande volymer at Italian Institute of Culture in Stockholm and Art Stays_Festival of Contemporary Art, Ptuj, Slovenia. In 2011 she has attended Future Farmers A.I.R., supported by G.A.I. Italian prize for young Italian artists abroad. In 2012 she has been selected for the annual workshop with Tim Rollins & K.O.S. at Fondazione Spinola Banna in Turin. In 2013 she has been invited to participate in Dolomiti contemporanee project and is the winner of one-year studio space at Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice. She is one of the finalists at Celeste Prize. In 2014 she has been selected for EGE-European glass experience travelling exhibition and her last work, Reflecting Venice, linked to the video LACUNA-Land of hidden spaces, here presented, will be part of a Collateral event in the Architecture Biennale.
Her poetics deals with the relationship between man and the environment in which he lives and with which he must reckon on a daily basis. This analysis, which often follows an anthropological approach, investigates and documents an identity which is at the same time personal and collective, relating to a specific territory, and giving rise to forms of exchange and transformation.
