I photographed every diaper my son used during his first year.
Visualizing all the diapers a newborn uses throughout a year transcends mere documentation; it encapsulates the journey of growth and invites contemplation on broader themes of sustainability and environmental impact.
A disposable item is designed to be thrown away after being used.
These objects, such as diapers, food wraps, toiletries, and other perishable items, have become the hidden metronome of our modern lives.
In light of this, I have decided to celebrate these objects of any human being’s personal history.
The visual representation of a high number of disposable items serves, I believe, as a catalyst for meaningful discussions about responsible consumption and the importance of preserving the planet for future generations.
‘Fatherhood’ exists within the framework of ‘Disposable’, which itself is a subset of ‘Therapy’, a long term project started in 2012 which uses photography to transform objects into lasting collective memories and a remedy to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
Biography
I am a photographer and filmmaker with a Master’s degree in Emergency Architecture and International Cooperation. After my studies between Rome and Barcelona, I moved to Egypt collaborating with an NGO and then to New York where I currently live and work. From 2017 to 2021 I co-directed the feature documentary Grain: Analog Renaissance, which premiered at the DOC NYC Film Festival. My photographic projects frequently adopt a serial approach, where research and repetition generate the real essence of my work. I have been always interested in existential themes such as memory and identity.
