Pointing at a New Planet is a video loop showing a 3D model of the hand of Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, floating over Mars. Pointing at a New Planet is part of an ongoing investigation by IOCOSE on the NewSpace movement, the privatised race for the colonisation of outer Space.
Elon Musk has been repeatedly claiming that he is giving shape to the future of mankind by bringing human beings towards new frontiers of the universe. The video features a song with the most incredible statements released by the CEO in recent past. A karaoke-style transcription in the bottom part of the screen will bring viewers to sing along. Viewers are encouraged to become part of the show, and in so doing enjoy and question at the same time the credibility of the statements that, so far, constitute the most visible part of the new space race. IOCOSE’s video trilogy intends to bring viewers to focus their attention on the discursive and bodily performances that turn Musk into a self-proclaimed messianic figure.
IOCOSE are a collective of four artists: Matteo Cremonesi (1984, Brescia, IT), Filippo Cuttica (1983, Rome, IT), Davide Prati (1983, Brescia, IT) and Paolo Ruffino (1984, Rome, IT). They have been working as a group since 2006, they live and work in London, Berlin and Brescia.
IOCOSE’s research investigates the after-failure moment of the teleological narratives of technological and cultural development, in regards to both their enthusiastic and pessimistic visions. IOCOSE believe that, in the long run, both utopian and dystopian narratives will disappoint, and much more mundane and varied realities will remain. IOCOSE’s focus is on the present moment in which the future is narrated, and on the ways in which these narratives are always already failing.
During the years, IOCOSE’s art practice has been consolidated in video installation and printed images, depicting a caricatural personification of technology through human gestures.
