Artwork description / Biography

Tanya Morand describes her artistic process as follows: ”Within the constraints of life imposed by the pandemic, and unable to travel, my latest paintings are reminiscent of here and elsewhere. Experimenting with multidisciplinary approaches, I develop these works based on 2 and 3 dimensional photo collage models which I then draw from and develop into paintings. This methodology has allowed me to make pictures that resonate with multiple experiences. The compositions often evoke an arabesque or a twisting ribbon of a building hovering over another space. Manipulating and transforming architectural forms to create dreamlike scenes, I combine and connect cities to invent imaginary places. Highly personal in terms of imagery, these pictures are inspired by the photographs I have taken of various cities as well as photos of my daily entourage. In my own way I resist the confinement measures and free my friends and neighbours by having them amble through imaginary and absurd cosmopolitan scenes that owe as much to Gordon Matta-Clark as Piranesi.”
