Tattoo:
A tattoo is a firm of body modification where a design is made by inserting ink dyes and/or pigments, either indelible or temporary into the dermis layer of the skin
I believe a tattoo should reflect the wearer’s individual taste and style aswell as displaying the skill-set and artistic outlook of the tattooist. Through delicate application and artistic vision the art of tattoo enables skin to be a form of canvas, allowing a collaberation that produces a unique and meaningful result.
Mixing design motifs, whether contemporary or traditional with the historical art of tattoo, artists of today are continuing to push boundaries. Through individual flare and will to master the craft.
My idea is to take the skill of tattoo and apply to skin but not attached to a living being but using animal hide and having it displayed like a traditional artifact or painting.
Notions and ideas that I plan to explore are
Researching the process of treating leather (locally). What issues this may present environmentally? Where it was sourced? The conditions of where the animal cane from?
Continuing to develop my style of tattoo referencing historical, contemporary artists, styles influences as well as indigenous methods of application. Ink pigment and components, pattern, color, needle material.
Display, using box like frames to display the hide using, opting to use cheap, mass produced sourced frames and the relationship that creates with the hide inside.
Human interference with the eco system. A reminder that this hide came from an animal and now it sits in a glass case.
Also it does contradict my journey to make eco art. It almost violates it. As a citizen of the world, I want to highlight how our planet is hurting, being disrupted. I want the viewer to feel this.
