Descrizione Opera / Biografia
Primal is a video that documents the layers of individual memories and how events take place from a subjective point of view. The stories originate from encounters that the video maker had during his 4293 kilometers walk across the United States going from the Mexican border to the Canadian one.
The footage is a mix from an archive of the videomaker’s life and re-enactments of the encounters he had during his hike. The Girl in the red dress is not represented because after the encounter in the desert the videomaker never shook her hand and to this day he still doubts her existence. Strong variations of colors reinforce the use of the digital format used to make the video. The effect gives a similar feeling as an expressionist painting where the subjective point of view overpowers the need to objectively represent reality. The digital grain in the video is present to break the illusion that images are an objective reality. The death and rebirth of the videomaker are symbolized in the last chapter where we can see two overlapped videos, one is archival footage of a hiker riding in a Ferrari after a lucky hitch the other is a montage of a burnt landscape ending with the Grand Canyon.
