Winners of Combat Prize 2014
The fifth edition of PREMIO COMBAT PRIZE ended on Saturday July 5th, in the marvelous setting of Museo di Storia Naturale of Livorno, proclaming its winners for this year.
The jury, composed by Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Francesca Baboni, Filippo Maggia, Andrea Bruciati, Alberto Salvadori and Stefano Taddei chose Barbara Prenka’s artwork "Dimostrazione di una stimma di somme" as the winner of Painting category for the following reason: painting as skin, a surface made sensitive. Pigment as structure and exoskeleton of own emotions, which become more a telluric affirmation, than a linguistic statement. As the artist remarks: “Somehow this repertoire of vibrant sensations and so gentle certainties, which steady resides in my imaginary, nourished by exigence of memory, finds an echo in every figure that may take shape from my work”.
A special mention of the jury went to Linda Soh Trengereid.
For the Photography section the jury acclaimed Cecilia Sergi as the winner with her “Senza Titolo” considering it as a finished and independent work, able to summarize content and formal balance as well. The movement of the young, who from the raft passes over the wharf, is represented like an action, with a taste for the Seventies reached with the colors adopted, because of the centrality of the character so rarely cherished by photography and for the meaning in it enclosed: an unconstrained and a little adventurous passage from uncertainty to certainty, from a fluid situation to a safe one, which is immortalized before it has been concluded, opting for a suspension that gives strength to the work and captures the spectator.
A special jury mention for Andrea Alessio.
For the Graphic arts category, Oyha Masaaki has been selected with his "Drawing n.28", felt as a work of extreme delicacy, able to touch for its lightness of line and the fluidity of vision. Through the liquidity of mezzatint the artist can efficiently propose, even within a very small size, visual suggestions that recreate the vibrations of brush stroke.
A special mention has been obtained in this category by Piia Lehti.
The Sculpture and Installation prize went to Tommaso Gatti for his work “Tessuto nervoso” , in which the artist succeeded in condensing the material silkiness with a firm and resolute formal result.
A special mention of the jury for Monika Gryko.
For the Video category the jury assigned the prize ex aequo to Simone Zaccagnini with “Poemetto #1” (Raffaello Sanzio e il Dragone Cinese) and to the Ellen Henriette Suhrke and Hilde Skevik duo with their work “Transactions #3”. Here are the reasons: for Simone Zaccagnini, the boredom fills our lives and their diverse representation. The research of this artist breaks that slack, presenting conceptual and visual lightnings, which are particularly extravagant. For Suhrke and Skevik, in times of existential connections in which the other can represent an unbearable weight to sustain, Ellen Henriette Suhrke and Hilde Skevik show an artwork in which solidarity among human beings is a not constrictive bond for different scenographic situations.
Regarding the Under 35 Special Prizes, that offer three artist residencies of two months in Berlin, Belgrade and Livorno, they have been respectively assigned to:
Andrea Grotto in Berlin, because like a book in which all the characters have been omitted, the artist tries to gain a story, describing only the auxiliar elements and its symbols. The pictorial narrative genesis, already structured, needs new stories and life-giving experiences, that only a metropolis like Berlin can guarantee;
Luca De Angelis in Belgrade for his powerful and vibrant figurative painting, with stilistic connotations which refer to the European context and have the proper potentiality for a comparison with the foreign scene.
Tiziano Rossano Mainieri won the residence in Livorno, because the jury recognized his planning capability shown inside the elaboration of the work proposed for Combat Prize, wishing that the same awareness and determination will guide him during the fulfillment of the new task he will get.
For PREMIERE LIVORNO, award devoted to encourage and support a young talented under 35 curator, Francesca D'Aria has been rewarded for her project “ContamInAzioni”.
