Premio Combat Prize

Mi interessa esplorare modi alternativi di presentare, interagire con, e consumare la fotografia in modo da attivare e facilitare il dialogo tra opera e spettatore. “Behind a Little House” è un intimo progetto di arte partecipativa al quale si può accedere unicamente attraverso le pagine di un artist book e sceglie di sacrificare la disseminazione (approccio larga scala Web 2.0) per reclamare una connessione fisica con l’audience. Volevo che il viewer iniziasse come un osservatore esterno, uno spettatore, e poi improvvisamente realizzasse che può partecipare; le otto (5-2-1) fotografie (installate su parete) conducono all’artist book dove tutti sono invitati a contribuire disegnando/scrivendo sull’ultima fotografia condivisa su ogni pagina, dando a co-autori estemporanei la libertà di plasmare la direzione ed il contenuto dell’opera. Testo, presentazione, e l’uso simultaneo di colore e bianco e nero sono forniti come indizi per il viewer verso l’interpretazione dell’opera fin quando il contibuto esterno non inizia ad aggiungere al dialogo. Il progetto, con la sua narrativa aperta, è volontariamente lasciato mutevole, aperto alla probabilità ed al cambiamento.Dovesse il lavoro essere selezionato sarò felice di inviare anche l’artist book, appositamente editato per l’esibizione.

Manuel Cosentino (1980, Italia) studia all’ Istituto Europeo di Design a Roma e si specializza in motion design prima di trasferirsi a Londra dove lavora come Visual Effects Artist nell’ industria del cinema. Dopo aver contribuito a diversi film - includendo Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix e Narnia Prince Caspian - decide di inseguire il suo amore per l’ arte e focalizzarsi esclusivamente sulla fotografia. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto a Galerie Huit durante “Les Rencontres d’Arles”, Francia; al Florida Museum of Photographic Art, USA; al Museo Diocesano Francesco Gonzaga, Mantova, Italia; alla 155° International Print Exhibition della Royal Photographic Society di Londra; al NoFound Photo Fair, Parigi; ed al Photo Center North West, Seattle, USA. Più recentemente è stato invitato da Franco Fontana ad esibire in “Quelli di Franco Fontana” al Pantheon di Mirafiori a Torino, Italia. Il suo lavoro è stato premiato internazionalmente da numerose organizzazioni ed istituzioni includendo l’International Photography Awards di New York, il Prix de la Photographie di Parigi e l’International Color Awards di Londra. Recentemente è stato nominato alla Huston Center for Photography Fellowship tra i Top 10 ed ha ricevuto l’apprezzamento della giuria all’International Emerging Artist Award, Dubai. Fotografie del progetto “Behind a Little House” sono state selezionate per premi e mostre da W.M. Hunt e Nat Trotman, (Curator) Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NYC. Il suo lavoro è nella collezione permanente della Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

I am interested in exploring alternative ways to present, interact with, and consume photography as a way to activate and facilitate the dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. “Behind a Little House” is an intimate participatory art project which can only be accessed through the pages of an artist book and chooses to sacrifice dissemination (large-scale web 2.0 approach) to reclaim a physical connection with the audience. I wanted the viewer to start as an outside observer, a spectator, and then suddenly realize that they can participate - the eight (5-2-1) wall mounted photographs lead up to the artist book where everyone is invited to contribute by drawing/writing on the last photograph sheared on each page, giving impromptu co-authors the freedom to shape the direction and the content of the artwork. Text, presentation, and the mixed use of color and black and white are provided as hints for the viewer to the artwork’s interpretation until external contribution starts to add to the dialogue. The project - with its open ended narrative - is purposefully left mutable, open to chance and to change.Should the work be selected I will be happy to send the artist book, specifically edited for the exhibition, to accompany the photographs.

Manuel Cosentino (b.1980, Italy) studied at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Rome and specialized in motion design before moving to London where he worked as a Visual Effects Artist in the film Industry. After contributing to several movies including Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix and Narnia Prince Caspian he decides to pursue his love for art and focus solely on photography moving back to Italy. His work has been shown at Galerie Huit during and alongside “Les Rencontres d’Arles”, France; the Florida Museum of Photographic Art, USA; the Museo Diocesano Francesco Gonzaga, Italy; the Royal Photographic Society 155th International Print Exhibition, London; NoFound Photo Fair, Paris; and the Photo Center North West, Seattle. More recently he has been invited by Franco Fontana to exhibit in “Quelli di Franco Fontana” at the Pantheon di Mirafiori a Torino, Italy. His work has been awarded internationally by several organizations and institution including the International Photography Awards, New York; the Prix de la Photographie, Paris and the International Color Awards, London. Recently has been a Huston Center for Photography Fellowship Top 10 nominee and has received the jury’s appreciation at the International Emerging Artist Award, Dubai. Photographs from the “Behind a Little House” project have been selected for awards and exhibitions by W.M. Hunt and Nat Trotman, (Curator) Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NYC. His work is in the permanent collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
